Binh Thuan: Drought must be basically dissolved by 2025

BTO – On May 25th morning, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hoang Hiep has a working session with the People’s committee of Binh Thuan province after a fact-finding tour yesterday at some drought-triggered localities.

The meeting discussed proactive measures against the ongoing drought situation in the coastal province of Binh Thuan.

As of May 23rd, the remaining water volume inside the province’s reservoir is recorded only 11 million cubic meters, gaining 4.3 percent of the useful capacity design. During the past 2 days, Binh Thuan eyed some early rains which help mitigate the thirst for water in some areas.

Although water level is recorded a little higher than that of some previous days, drought is still suffering a wide range of local production activities and daily life. Nearly 14,000 hectares of Winter-Spring cultivated crop (rice and maize) has been cut down. In the meantime, 16,000 hectares of dragon fruit farming area is deprived of watering. Notably, over 27,000 households in 43 communes, wards, and towns are struggling with running water shortage.

A number of residents have to buy water for use with a price fluctuating from VND 60,000 to 120,000 per cubic meter.

Due to limited state budget, the province has not yet allocated funds for some aquatic constructions of reservoirs, allocation and distributions of daily water use and production, said Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Le Tuan Phong said.

At the meeting, Vice Chairman has petitioned for the investment project of La Nga 3 Lake in Tanh Linh district, and planning for first reservoir of the public investment planning for a medium term of 2021-2025, funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Deputy Minister Hiep confirmed the necessary of water reservoir to adapt water use and basically address serious drought in Binh Thuan by 2025.

With regard to La Nga 3 Lake investment project, Deputy Minister Hiep urged the provincial authorities to complete specific planning for the reservoir constructions.
