General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong’s message ahead of 13th National Party Congress

The speech by Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong at the recent national cadres’ conference to review the organisation of Party congresses at all levels for the 2020-2025 tenure was a strong message to the entire Party and people to bring into full play the spirit and experience of all congresses towards the success of the 13th National Party Congress, bringing the country forward into a new stage of development.

First of all, the core Party cadres must resolutely maintain the revolutionary morality and fight all manifestations of individualism, while fulfilling their responsibilities to the Party and people.

Immediately being published by the media, his speech was welcomed by a large number of cadres, Party members and people from all walks of life. They expressed their sympathies with the General Secretary and President’s confidence on “the core cadres who are the nuclei of the Party, precious capital of the revolution and children of the people” and how to keep and to follow the status, morality and honour of Party members and revolutionary cadres, especially leaders”.

In his many articles and remarks at various conferences, the Party General Secretary and President has reminded about and analysed deeply the status, revolutionary morality and honour of all cadres and Party members. The works related to Party building and rectification that were directed by the Party Central Committee, Politburo and the Secretariat, especially General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong, over the two recent tenures showed the determination to build a contingent of excellent cadres at all levels who are truly the “public servants” of the people. The dedication of their talent to serve the country and people is not only a heavy responsibility, but also a matter of great pride for all cadres. At his meeting with nearly 400 Party members who also came to Hanoi to attend the programme “Vietnamese youth remembers Uncle Ho’s testament” in 2019, the top leader expressed his hope that many young Party members will be elected to the Party Central Committee. However, he also noted that on becoming a Party Central Committee member, they must devote, train and strive to make the Party stronger.

In addition to his confidence and pleasure at the maturity of cadres at all levels in all aspects, the Party and State leader is always concerned about any deterioration in political ideology, morality and the lifestyle of several cadres and Party members, including high-level officials. He felt pain when disciplining his comrades; however, there’s no other way because it is necessary in order to maintain the discipline of the Party and the people’s desire. Ahead of the 13th National Party Congress, he once again emphasised the revolutionary morality of cadres and Party members, highlighting the significance, importance and urgency of the fundamental and core issues in all revolutionary stages. He recalled Pavel Korchagin’s famous quote on the ideal and lifestyle of the youths in “How the Steel was tempered” – a favourite book of young people in past years, as well as Uncle Ho’s recommendations on the morality and talents of revolutionaries.

In the past, people who joined the revolution as “fire testing gold” sacrificed their lives to the nation and people to honour the national flag. During the current Doi Moi (Renewal) process, cadres at all levels have been trained comprehensively by the Party and have faced many difficulties and challenges; therefore, they have been constantly matured both in terms of professional qualifications and working capacity to make great contributions to the country. The people have not forgotten these merits. However, it is very regrettable and shameful as several cadres, who were trusted by the Party and State and honoured by the people, refused to regularly self-improve their morality and lifestyle instead falling into individualism and the temptation of power and money. The message conveyed by the Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong in his speech once again awakened all cadres, Party members and people to never satisfy with themselves but constantly train and forge their morality and lifestyle and avoid individualism - an invisible dangerous enemy that always lurks inside everyone.

There are still many things to do in preparations for the 13th National Party Congress, including the approval of draft documents and discussions about personnel work. This is an important work to ensure the success of the Congress and the selection of the Party Central Committee, Politburo, the Secretariat and key cadres of the Party towards a united, pure and strong enough collective. More than ever, each official and Party member, particularly the participants in the recent national cadres’ conference, should convey the spirit of the conference as well as the message of the Party General Secretary and President to the whole Party and people, especially the delegates to the 13th National Party Congress. With the success of Party congresses at all levels, it can be believed that those who were selected to attend the 13th National Party Congress have enough qualifications, bravery and capacity to fulfil all assigned tasks. The top leader asked all cadres to always train and to maintain their revolutionary morality and fight against individualism.

The recommendations made by Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong are not only significant in relation to the 13th National Party Congress but also a “handbook” for cadres, Party members and young people in Vietnam in their vibrant and colorful life. Following these recommendations, people will perfect themselves in all aspects of life to really become good citizens for both society and their families.
