Discovering Binh Thuan’s celebrity Lau Ong Hoang

BTO – Positioned on Ba Nai hill (Phu Hai ward, Phan Thiet city), Lau Ong Hoang is a historic site associated with love story of Han Mac Tu poet and the Vietnamese resistance war against the French colonialism.

The site first came into history in 1911 when Duke De Montepensier travelled to Vietnam for sightseeing and hunting. He decided to buy a l536-square-meter-land in the hill for building a villa as he recognized the poetic landscape of Phan Thiet.

The Duke’s villa was regarded as the most modern work in Binh Thuan at that time when its completion. The name “Lau Ong Hoang” sprang from then in the popular way that the indigenous people mentioned to the luxury of the French aristocrat. In July 1917, Duke De Montpensier sold the villa to a French hotelier- Prasetts. Later, the emperor Bao Dai bought it for residence.

In 1945, the French colonials returned to Vietnam and built a military post surrounding Lau Ong Hoang to watch the entire Phan Thiet. Since then, Lau Ong Hoang area became a fierce battlefield.

The site is also associated with Han Mac Tu poet (born in 1912 and died in 1940) because it used to be a place where Han Mac Tu and his lover Mong Cam made dates and watched the moon.

Nowadays, the former Lau Ong Hoang has no longer existed, there are ruins of an old military post of the French colonial system covered with weeds. The villa was completely destroyed during the war, leaving only a few faint trails.

Not far away Lau Ong Hoang, Po Sah Inu Cham tower is also located in Ba Nai hill. The tower is now known as a famous tourist attraction, a remnant of the former Champa Kingdom.
