Binh Thuan takes action to prevent African swine fever

BTO – On March 04th, a tele-conference linking localities/ provinces across the country was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung on the emergency issue of African Swine Fever (ASF). He has asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), relevant agencies and local authorities to urgently implement measures to prevent the spread of African swine fever.

At Binh Thuan province, Vice chairman of the provincial People’s committee Nguyen Tuan Phong attended the tele-conference. The northern port city of Hai Phong is stepping up solutions to control African swine fever (ASF), the municipal sub-department of animal husbandry and veterinary said on February 23. 

According to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), African swine fever has been found in over 20 countries all over the world since early 2017 until March 3rd 2019 with more than one million pigs culled. African swine fever is reportedly a fatal infectious disease caused by a virus which spreads rapidly among pigs. China reported 110 hot spots of such epidemic in 28 provinces.

In Vietnam, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) confirmed that African swine fever had been found in 20 communes of 13 districts in four provinces, Hung Yen, Thai Binh, Thanh Hoa and Ha Nam, and Hai Phong city. The total number of culled pigs was nearly 2,350 with estimated losses of tens of billions of dong. Sick pigs were found at a farm in Van Xa commune, Kim Bang district, Ha Nam province early this week. All 15 pigs with the disease were culled and buried immediately by the provincial Department of Animal Health and local authorities. Measures to control the spread of disease were implemented in the locality. The department took 388 pig samples for testing from the farms of 98 households near the affected household.


In respect of Binh Thuan province, the provincial authorities urged the functional authorities to urgently implement measures to prevent the spread of African swine fever, step up propaganda to swine farms, strictly control the transport, slaughtering and distribution of Pork from ASF-hit areas.

In the meantime, mass examinations of all pig farms in the locality shall be launched, especially in the border districts of Duc Linh, Tuy Phong, Ham Tan and Ham Thuan Bac.
