The project,
sponsored by Global Environment Fund under the UN Development Programme (UNDP/GEF
SGP), with a total capital of more than VND 3.3 billion (VND 1.4 bln funded by
UNDP and VND 1.9 bln from reciprocal capital), will be implemented within 2
years (2020-2022), focusing on locations which regularly generate plastic waste,
such as Phan Thiet fishing port, tourism route of Nguyen Dinh Chieu (Phan Thiet
city), Lien Huong fishing port, passenger ship from Lien Huong townlet to Hon
Cau marine protected area (Tuy Phong district), the communes of Tan Thanh, Ngu
Phung and Long Hai (Phu Quy district).
Accordingly,
training courses will be opened to enhance knowledge and skills for local
residents in preventing plastic waste, such as: how to collect, classify, reuse
and recycle all kinds of waste. At the same time, women associations in Phan
Thiet, Tuy Phong and Phu Quy will intensify propaganda on the harmful effects of
plastic waste to the environment and human health, therefore mobilize officers,
people and the whole community to change the habit and join hands in reducing
and stopping the use of plastic products that are harmful to the environment.
The project management boards in localities also launched “Anti-plastic waste
campaigns”, which attracted the participation of women association’s members and
households in cleaning up the environment, collecting, classifying and treating
garbage, contributing to keeping our living environment clean and safe.
Speaking at the
ceremony- vice chairman Le Tuan Phong highly appreciated UNDP’s assistance and
coordination in the implementation of many projects in Binh Thuan during the
past time. He asked the provincial Women Association, relevant agencies, and
localities to actively coordinate with UNDP in implementing this project with
high effectiveness.
