Binh Thuan eyes an additional patrol ship in protection of seafood resources

With its 192 kilometer-long coastline and fisheries management area of 60.000 square kilometers, Binh Thuan is at the cutting-edge of seafood exploitation and is among the three major fishing grounds of the country. The total number of fishing ships in the province has reached almost 8,000. Of which, off-shore fishing boats are 2,680 with a yearly output of over 165,000 tons of seafood of all kinds. Thanks to its major fishing grounds, there are about 2,000 fishing boats from other provinces visiting the local waters for fishing every year.

The fishery inspectors often confront with offenders and infringement cases at sea

BTO –Chairman of Binh Thuan provincial People’s Committee has proposed the ministerial and central levels to give a financial support of VND 6.5 billion to invest a new patrol ship for Binh Thuan’s fishery inspector forces under the Government’s Target program for sustainable development of fishery economy.

Over the past years, Binh Thuan Department of Fisheries has made much attempts to patrol, control and handle with cases of violation at sea. Binh Thuan is one of the provinces with best management in the protection of seafood resources. Especially, the province has pioneered in issuing decision on management of trawl fishing, reducing trawlers, maintaining well the province’s seafood resources towards sustainable development. The activity of marine inspection is regularly carried out, contributing to the work of dealing with infringement cases at sea. However, the local seafood inspectors are facing many difficulties in task performance in terms of facilities (there are only two 660CV-capacity patrol ships built in 1997 and 2000), large waters area and insufficient human resources. In reality, the patrol forces often encountered with risks of attack caused by offenders and foreign fishing boats in the Phu Quy waters. For multitude of difficulties, the provincial People’s Committee had document to ask for the support of one patrol ship for the province from the ministerial and central agencies.
