Binh Thuan to get ready for UN Vesak Day 2019

BTO- The 16th UN Vesak Day 2019 (UNDV) is hosted by the National Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in Ha Nam province from May 12 to May 14, under the Buddhist Approach to Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Sustainable Societies”, aiming to contribute to realising the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. 

This year’s Vesak Day has attracted more than 1,600 delegates from 110 countries and territories around the world and over 20,000 Vietnamese Buddhist dignitaries, monks, nuns and followers. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended and addressed the opening ceremony.

In Binh Thuan province, the UN Vesak Day 2019 is taking place across the province from May 12th to May 19th. All the preparation work is completed to response the international day in Vietnam. “This UNDV conference is an important foreign affairs event which helps enhance Viet Nam Buddhism’s role in international integration, and confirms the country’s position and responsibility with the UN,” said Most Venerable Thich Minh Nhat - Chairman of the provincial Buddhist Sangha’s Executive Council.

Reportedly, there will be procession of flower floats along the major streets of Phan Thiet city to mark the Vesak day on May 19th.

Alongside opening and closing ceremonies, its programme includes one domestic and five international workshops on issues like responsible leadership for sustainable peace, Buddhist approaches to family issues, healthcare, education, morality, responsible consumption, and the Fourth Industrial Revolution and Buddhism.

This is the third time the UN's commemoration of Vesak has been held in Vietnam. Previously, it has taken place in Vietnam's capital Hanoi in 2008 and the northern province of Ninh Binh in 2014.
